June 1st is the International Child Protection Day. The proposals on ensuring child rights was raised on June 1st in 1950, in the “International Conference of Women” organized by General Assembly of UN, and in that meeting 1 June was chosen to be dedicated to the internationally protection of child rights. This date is also celebrated in Azerbaijan as many other countries of the World.


As in many democratic countries, protection of human rights is attached particular importance. And of course child rights are inseparable and important part of human rights. Considering that children are our future and the future of our country is in their hands it is our job to protect them all together. Protection of children under parent patronage is firstly ensured by their parents, but the children been deprived of parent patronage need our attention and care.

“Human Rights in the XXI Century-Azerbaijan” Foundation has realized and still realizing several projects, programs on the protection of human rights and enlightenment of the society in this field during its functioning period for 4 years. One of the main priorities of the Foundation is the protection of child rights. Like previous years, our Foundation implemented several activities this year, too. “A book for each one” campaign, and the TV program “The future of orphans” with Khazar TV channel can be included to these activities.

“Human Rights in the XXI Century-Azerbaijan” Foundation delivered advertisements with “a book for each one” campaign. In these advertisements it was asked to every Azerbaijan citizen to bring child literature to the Foundation. By this way the citizens with a little effort and time were able to make a child glad with a book. After the advertisements hundreds of books were brought to the Foundation. Even, a lady, Irirna Mikhailovna appealed to the Foundation with her intention about giving a piano to orphans.

On July 1st, International Child Protection Day staff of “Human Rights in the XXI Century-Azerbaijan” Foundation met with children in boarding-school №2, in Merdekan settlement for orphans and children been deprived of parent patronage. During the meeting collected books and holiday presents were given to children, and their problems were discussed. The piano given to children as a present was settled at the school conference hall. We should say that the children were interested and happy with the piano.

In the joint program of our Foundation with “Khazar TV” on the topic of “The future of orphans” Satiba Farhadli, psychologist of Towards the Unity Care for Disabled and Orphans Social Union, and the lawyer of “Human Rights in the XXI Century-Azerbaijan” Foundation Rovshana Rahimova were the participants. In the program topics such as the problems of orphans, level of protection of their rights, their present situation and social adaptation to the society in the future were discussed. The orphans participated in the program talked about life style, problems they face, and their thoughts about the future. One of the spectators called the studio and informed us about his intention about helping orphans to find job.

NOTE: during the discussions in the program it was mentioned that according to the statistical information of 2005, there were 618 criminal acts committed by the children under the mature age during a year in the Republic. This only forms 3 percent of all crimes committed in the Country. In fact, this case is the most satisfactory in CIS area.
